What are ERE’s and how do I earn money with them?

ERE rewards are perhaps the easiest way to earn money with your electric car. Below we explain what they are, how they work and how Stekker arranges them for you.

What is an ERE?

ERE stands for Emission Reduction Unit (in Dutch: Emissiereductie-eenheid). It’s a certificate from the Dutch government that proves you charged your car with electricity instead of fossil fuel. Each kWh you charge prevents a small amount of CO₂ — and the Dutch Emissions Authority (NEa) gives you credits for that.

These credits are valuable because Dutch fossil fuel suppliers are legally required to compensate for their CO₂ emissions. By trading ERE rewards, you sell your “saved CO₂” to those parties — and they need to buy.

How much does it earn?

Each kWh you charge generates approximately 0.333 ERE rewards. The price per ERE fluctuates with the market, but in 2026 it’s roughly between €0.08 and €0.20 per ERE.

For an average household charging 5,000 kWh per year, that’s between €130 and €330 net per year. Heavier users with solar and a dynamic contract can reach €1,000+ per year.

How does it work in practice?

  1. You sign up with Stekker via the authorization form. You authorize us to claim ERE rewards on your behalf.
  2. You connect your charger to the Stekker platform (your charger must have a MID-certified meter — see the overview of suitable chargers).
  3. We register every kWh you charge with the NEa, automatically.
  4. We trade the rewards on the market.
  5. We pay you out per quarter on your IBAN: 82% of the proceeds. Stekker keeps 18% commission to cover registration, trading, payout and customer support.

What does it cost?

Nothing upfront. No subscription, no setup costs. Stekker only earns when you earn — no cure, no pay. We keep 18% commission on the gross proceeds; the remaining 82% goes directly to you.

If you also want active smart charging (charging on cheap hours and your own solar), the commission becomes 23%. Smart charging itself doesn’t cost anything; the +5% covers the algorithms behind it.

Frequently asked questions

How long until I receive my first payout?
Payouts happen quarterly. Your first one is typically 3-4 months after signing up.

Is the ERE reward taxable?
For consumers it’s a compensation for emissions reduction, not income. So no, you don’t need to declare it as income. Read more about tax.

Can I cancel?
Yes, anytime after the calendar year ends (NEa requirement for ERE registration). Read more about cancelling.
