Frequently asked questions
What exactly are ERE’s?
ERE stands for Emission Reduction Unit. Every kilowatt-hour you charge into your car prevents CO₂ emissions compared to fossil fuel. The Dutch Emissions Authority (NEa) applies a fixed renewable share of 50.5% (2026) for consumers. Stekker registers, trades, and pays out your proceeds.
What conditions does the NEa set?
You need a charger with a built-in MID-certified kWh meter, and you must be the owner of your grid connection. Stekker handles all registration and reporting to the NEa.
What will I notice from the grid congestion services?
During peak moments in the winter evening (usually 17:00–20:00), Stekker will avoid charging as much as possible. You’ll barely notice it. You provide flexibility to the grid operator and receive about €35/year in return.
When does smart charging on price come?
Under the hood at Stekker, everything already works for smart charging. From June 1 we roll out smart charging for consumers again. Your car then charges as much as possible at the smartest hours of the day. More info follows when we go live.
Do I have to change anything about my charger?
No. If your charger has a MID meter and is compatible with Stekker, it works directly. We check this for you during sign-up.
Do I need a dynamic energy contract?
Not to earn money with ERE’s or grid congestion services. To benefit from dynamic quarter-hour prices, you do need this type of subscription. When you also combine this with your own solar panels, you have the maximum advantage.
What does it cost me?
Nothing upfront. Stekker keeps 18% commission on the ERE compensation and the congestion compensation. Savings from smart charging are 100% yours. You always keep more than without Stekker.
Who is Stekker?
Stekker has built smart charging solutions for businesses and consumers since 2018. We combine dozens of metrics relevant to charging as smartly as possible, and we have years of experience in that. For the consumer market, we combine earning an ERE reward with smart charging — so you can get the maximum benefit from your charger.
