What is smart charging?
Smart charging means your electric car doesn’t just charge — it charges at the right moment. Software determines when, how fast and how much — based on energy prices, your solar panels, your grid connection and when you need the car.
The result: a lower energy bill, more use of your own solar power, and a contribution to a more stable power grid. Without you having to do anything.
Five levels of smart charging
Not all “smart charging” is the same. We distinguish five levels:
Level 1 — Manual
You set a timer yourself or unplug when you think it’s done.
Level 2 — Planning
The app plans when your car charges based on tomorrow’s energy prices.
Level 3 — Real-time
Your car charges automatically when electricity is cheap and stops when it’s expensive — live, without you doing anything.
Level 4 — Cooperation
Your car, solar panels and home battery work together as one smart system. You earn money by providing flexibility to the power grid.
Level 5 — Fully autonomous
Everything self-regulates. Your home, your car and the power grid automatically coordinate — you notice nothing except a lower bill.
Stekker offers level 3 today (automatic cheap charging, solar charging) and the first steps of level 4 (emission credit participation, cluster coordination).
What does smart charging earn you?
With smart charging through Stekker, you earn in three ways:
1. Energy savings — charging at cheap moments saves an average of €0.05 per kWh.
2. Emission reduction credits — every green kWh generates tradeable emission units.
3. Grid congestion compensation — you receive compensation when your charging power is adjusted to help the grid.
