Stekker offered smart charging to private customers from 2019. Since 2023 only to businesses, or for free to private customers who managed to connect (because their charger manufacturer made it easy for us). Since 2026 Stekker offers EREs – and smart charging is only made available to private customers in combination with earning EREs.
What smart charging does
For us, smart charging means your car charges as much as possible at moments of low prices, plenty of sun and when it is not rush hour on the grid.
In the Stekker app you set, per car and per location, when you wanted to leave, how much of the battery should charge right away and how much Stekker could plan smartly. The app showed for each charging session what it would have cost without smart charging, and sent a notification if your charging goal could not be reached by your departure time.
From app to ERE
Stekker started in 2019 as an app for smart charging at home.
In 2023 the app became free and we added connections with Easee, Tesla, Zaptec and E-Flux. We found that some car brands make it easy for us to read their data and others block us completely. That is why the focus shifted from the car to the charger.
That same year we closed it to private customers again and started focusing on B2B customers. We launched a dashboard for business customers, and ran a trial with Liander in a few neighbourhoods on the effect of smart charging on grid congestion. At the end of 2024 we added management of complete charging sites.
Since 2026 you can have Stekker register your EREs. Smart charging will come back on top of that, but only for those who earn EREs.
What comes next
We are starting with a beta for a select group and will expand step by step in 2027. Not every charger brand will be eligible. We are now looking at which parts we can bring into our ERE proposition.
