What is MID certification?
MID stands for Measuring Instruments Directive, a European regulation that ensures measuring instruments are accurate and reliable. For EV chargers, MID certification means the built-in kWh meter is officially calibrated and the measured values are legally usable.
For ERE participation, this is mandatory: the NEa only accepts measurements from MID-certified meters. Without MID certification, we cannot request ERE credits for your charging sessions.
How do I check if my charger is MID-certified?
Three ways:
- Type plate on the charger. Often there’s a MID logo or a conformity declaration. Look near the connector or in the manual.
- Manual or spec sheet. The technical specifications mention whether the built-in kWh meter is MID-certified. Search for “MID” or “EN 50470”.
- Manufacturer page. Manufacturers often mention MID in product descriptions, especially for commercial models.
Not sure? Send the brand and model to [email protected] — we’ll look it up for you.
Which brands support MID?
Most commercial and semi-public chargers ship with MID certification by default. For residential chargers it varies by model and version:
- MID standard: Alfen Eve Pro, Mennekes AMTRON Professional, ABL eMH3, EVBox BusinessLine
- MID as option: some Zaptec and Easee models have MID variants — check the suffix in the model number
- Rarely MID: basic residential chargers (e.g. Wallbox Pulsar basic) — often have a kWh meter but without MID certification
The full list of supported models is in Which chargers work with Stekker?.
What if my charger doesn’t have MID?
Unfortunately we cannot request ERE credits for you. Two options:
- Add an external MID meter. An installer can place a separate MID-certified meter between the mains and your charger. Cost: around €300-500 one-time, without replacing the charger.
- Upgrade or replace the charger. Some manufacturers offer an MID module upgrade; others make it simpler to switch to a MID variant.
Stekker still works for other benefits (smart charging on quarter-hour prices, solar optimization). Only ERE participation is unavailable.
Buying a new charger — what to look for?
Three things to ask your installer or retailer:
- MID-certified kWh meter (built-in or external) — required for ERE
- OCPP 1.6J or 2.0.1 support — required for smart charging through Stekker
- Compatible with our ecosystem — check our compatibility list
Then you know all three revenue layers (smart charging, ERE, congestion) work optimally.
